Vigur

Vigur is a small privately owned island in Ísafjarðardjúp, just east of Ísafjörður town. It’s a place where time seems to stand still. It is the second largest island of the Isafjörður Bay. It is about 2 kilometres long and 400 metres wide. Vigur has recently earned a great reputation and has become a must-see for visitors to the area, especially during the nesting season. The island is home to thousands of birds and a leisurely walk around the island gives you an opportunity to see an abundance of birds in their natural environment. The only surviving windmill of the county is maintained in Vigur Island, and is close to 160 years old.

The family that still lives on the island bases its livelihood mainly on tourism along with a collection of eggs and eiderdown and puffin hunting. During summer there is daily boat schedule, sometimes even another one in the evening, so you can enjoy a magical sunset while strolling around this tiny island.

To get to Vigur, there is a daily boat tour from Ísafjörður.
