Breiðafjörður is a fjord and nature reserve located between the Westfjords and the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It measures around 50 kilometres wide and 125 kilometres long. The fjord features countless islands, estimated to be around 3000 and is encircled with mountains, including Snæfellsjökull glacier. The rock formations on the island are mainly basalt and are among Iceland’s oldest. It is also the only place in Iceland where you can find moon rock. The wildlife in Breiðarfjörður is abundant with cod, shrimps, shellfish, seals, whales and a wide range of seabirds.
