Mount Akrafjall is a prominent landmark from the capital, over the coast, to the north. It is located close to Akranes. The mountain offers a great panoramic view from Reykjanes, over Faxaflói Bay, to the Snæfellsjökull glacier.
The most striking thing about this mountain are the steep valleys that open to the west. Its geological structure consists mainly of basalt, which is shaped into columns in some places. Akrafjall offers one of the largest breeding grounds for gulls. To this day, many people collect their eggs in summer to eat them.
