On the edge of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier stands the 642 metres high Mount Mælifell. It is one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks, an awe-inspiring, green moss covered pyramid mountain standing alone in the vast black desert landscape. The nearby campsite at Þakgil makes a convenient base for explorations of this striking area. You’ll need a 4×4 car to get to Mælifell, but please note that the road is often closed during winter and therefore Mælifell is only accessible during the summer months.
