Café Loki is a cosy little café and restaurant located in the heart of downtown Reykjavík, across the road from Hallgrímskirkja with wonderful views over the church and the city. They emphasise on authentic Icelandic homemade food, such as flatbread, rye bread, meat soup and other delicacies. You can even try the notorious shark with a shot of Icelandic schnapps to wash it down. They have great daily lunch offers, with a different fish or meat dish on each day of the week but they also offer vegetarian options. They also an excellent beer selection, as many of the Icelandic foods pair perfectly with a nice beer.

It’s the ideal café if you’d like to try some of the traditional Icelandic foods you’ve probably heard so much about but with enough options for less adventurous eaters. The staff is welcoming and friendly while the service is quick and efficient. Loki Café is suitable for both lunch and dinners as their meals are hearty and fulfilling.

Café Loki’s rye bread ice cream. Yes, it does sound a bit odd but the flavour is absolutely wonderful. The Icelandic rye bread is already quite sweet so it works perfectly as an ice cream flavour. The rye bread ice cream has become renowned and it’s a perfect ending to a good meal at Café Loki.

Reviews

We actually came to this restaurant on the food tour. We later visited again for the fermented shark. Both times were extremely pleasant. My husband and I originally thought this place would be a tourist trap because of the location next to the church. We were wrong. The shark is definitely an acquired taste, but a must do while in Iceland. We also had the Rye Bread Ice Cream multiple times. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are pictures in the menu as well if you need help visualizing any dishes.
