Sægreifinn or the Sea Baron is a warm and friendly restaurant that specialises in seafood. You’ll find the restaurant in a green-painted, old fisherman’s hut located in the heart of Reykjavík, in the vibrant harbour quarter. The Sea Baron is famous for its lobster soup, which has been referred to as ‘’Worlds Greatest Lobster Soup’’.

The story behind the Sea Baron is fascinating, but the retired fisherman Kjartan Halldórsson ran a fish shop, selling all sorts of fresh fish products directly from the dock. He was once asked by some foreigners if he could also prepare and cook the fish they just bought. Kjartan was more than happy to do that, ran to the nearest shop to purchase a grill and cooked the fish on the spot inviting visitors to dine inside the fish shop, which is where the Sea Baron restaurant stands to this day.

The restaurant offers guests a simple, yet delicious menu where everything made from the freshest ingredients for the highest quality. The famous lobster soup and grilled fish on a spear are the signature dishes of the Sea Baron and are highly recommended. They use a variety of seafood on the grill spears, such as trout, salmon, shrimp, cod, scallops and much more.

The Sea Baron has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a friendly and personal service. It’s an ideal place to stop when strolling through the harbour quarter, to sit down and have a hearty and tasty lobster soup before continuing the journey.

Reviews

Visited twice on our trip. The first time we had lobster soup, red fish and cod, the second time the soup and shrimps – all amazingly fresh and filled with the best flavours. During lunch, there are often loads of offers for a lobster soup + fish skewer for around 2200-2500 ISK. It’s a big portion if you get it for one. The soup alone is 1350 ISK. There’s also seating in the back and upstairs. Honestly, there should be more restaurants like this in Reykjavik.
