Hafnarfjall

Hafnarfjall
Hafnarfjall

The Hafnarfjall mountain is near Bogarnes and is the ruin of a large, extinct volcano. It is around four million years old, 844m high and its sides have fallen victim to erosion. The mountain is mainly made of basalt, but there is a small crack on the north side made of granophyr. You can either climb the lower peak opposite the sea or venture up the high peak called Gildalshnjúkur. At the foot of the mountain is a small birch forest that was created by the government's reforestation project.
