Gvendarlaug Natural Thermal Pool is located in southern Strandir district, north of Drangsnes Village in eastern Westfjords.
The Westfjords are not known to be very geothermal active and unlike in most other regions of Iceland, houses are heated with electricity instead of geothermal water. Therefore it is quite surprising to know that nowhere in Iceland are as many natural bathing pools to be found than in the Westfjords, many of them hidden or forgotten by locals and visitors.
There are actually two natural thermal pools at Gvendarlaug, one of them is medieval and is being preserved as an archaeological site. The other is close by and next to it you’ll find a modern swimming pool. Both pools are believed to have healing, if not miraculous powers. To add to the adventure you can also visit the nearby Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.
